Population

In 2005-2009, Exeter Township had a total population of 25,000; 13,000 (52 percent) females and 12,000 (48 percent) males. The median age was 40.3 years. Twenty-four percent of the population was under 18 years ; six percent between 18-24 years; twenty-seven percent between 25-44 years; twenty-eight percent between 45-64, and 14 percent was 65 years and older.

For people reporting one race alone, 93 percent was White; 4 percent was Black or African American; less than 0.5 percent was American Indian and Alaska Native; 1 percent was Asian; less than 0.5 percent was Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 1 percent was some other race. One percent reported two or more races. Three percent of the people in Exeter Township were Hispanic. Ninety-one percent of the people in Exeter Township were White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

Households & Families: In 2005-2009 there were 9,500 households in Exeter Township. The average household size was 2.6 people. Of the 9,916 housing units; 8,288 are owner-occupied. The median value of owner-occupied homes is $180,000.

Families made up 73 percent of the households in Exeter Township. This figure includes both married-couple families (63 percent) and other families (10 percent). Nonfamily households made up 27 percent of all households in Exeter Township. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were composed of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

Children with Working Parents: There were 1,659 households with children under age 6. Of these households, 1,232 had all parents in the labor force. Of the households with children ages 6-17 years, 3,094 had all parents in the family in the labor force.

Nativity and Language: Four percent of the people living in Exeter Township in 2005-2009 were foreign born. Ninety-six percent was native, including 80 percent who were born in Pennsylvania.

Among people at least five years old living in Exeter Township in 2005-2009, 6 percent spoke a language other than English at home. Of those speaking a language other than English at home, 32 percent spoke Spanish and 68 percent spoke some other language; 22 percent reported that they did not speak English "very well."

Geographic Mobility: In 2005-2009, 90 percent of the people at least one year old living in Exeter township were living in the same residence one year earlier; 7 percent had moved during the past year from another residence in the same county, 2 percent from another county in the same state, 1 percent from another state, and less than 0.5 percent from abroad.

Education: In 2005-2009, 91 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 30 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. Nine percent were dropouts; they were not enrolled in school and had not graduated from high school.

The total school enrollment in Exeter Township was 6,200 in 2005-2009. Nursery school and kindergarten enrollment was 630 and elementary or high school enrollment was 4,300 children. College or graduate school enrollment was 1,200.

 

Income

The median income of households in Exeter Township, in 2005-2009, was $68,709. Eighty-four percent of the households received earnings and 20 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Twenty-nine percent of the households received Social Security. The average household income from Social Security was $16,912. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

Poverty and Participation in Government Programs: In 2005-2009, 4 percent of people were in poverty. Seven percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 5 percent of people 65 years old and over. Four percent of all families and 6 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.

 

Employment

In 2005-2009, for the employed population 16 years and older, the leading industries in Exeter Township were (1) educational services, health care, and social assistance, 24 percent; (2) manufacturing, 16 percent; (3) retail trade, 14 percent.

Eighty-four percent of the people employed were private wage and salary workers; 10 percent federal, state, or local government workers; and 6 percent self-employed.

Travel to Work: Eighty-eight percent of Exeter Township workers drove to work alone in 2005-2009, 7 percent carpooled, less than 0.5 percent took public transportation, and 1 percent used other means. The remaining 4 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 26 minutes to get to work.
